How to Love Cooking – Cathy
Welcome to How to Love Cooking.
A recipe blog for anyone who needs a little extra encouragement in the kitchen.
Let me begin by saying, I get it.
I get that cooking seems intimidating, boring, messy, difficult, and not worth the effort. I certainly felt that way for a while.
But as time has gone by, cooking has become my escape, my stress reliever, my favorite self-care method, and my love language.
I didn’t really grow up cooking with my relatives at home.
I watched them cook, smelled the wonderful aromas, and ate delicious meals.
But I never really learned how to make much beyond pasta, sandwiches, and boxed cake mixes until I started college.
And while I’m not a trained or professional chef by any means, I have now been successfully cooking and baking for my friends, family, and myself for the past 10+ years.
I was pretty rough when I started, though.
One of my most embarrassing cooking mistakes was when I was tasked with warming up some leftovers for my family for dinner one night.
The leftovers were stuffed shells – stuffed shells that I reheated in a pot of boiling water.
I mean, I couldn’t even reheat leftovers correctly!
Beyond that, I’ve also set off the smoke alarm in my kitchen numerous times, unintentionally flambéed my main course, and burnt more pieces of toast than I can count. I’ve misread recipes, overwhelmed a dish with an ingredient, and have sometimes had to start all over. And you know what? I still REALLY love cooking!
My mishaps didn’t discourage me because with each mistake, I learned, improved and got that much closer to delicious, well-executed meals.
So if any of the above scenarios sound familiar, take heart.
I can assure you that once you learn how to love cooking, you can get really, really good at it.
I don’t have a big fancy kitchen. I don’t have all the latest gadgets and appliances. And I certainly don’t have an unlimited budget for top of the line ingredients. I learned to cook as a student, at home with my family, and later in teeny-tiny apartment kitchens. And guess what? I still made really delicious food.
As with every new venture in life, just start where you are with what you have.
My simple mission here is to provide easy and delicious recipes (and lots of encouragement) for anyone learning to cook.
As a self-taught home cook who made PLENTY of mistakes along the way, I’ll share shortcuts, tips, tricks, and other resources that I hope will be helpful. As you practice and become more confident, I’m positive your love of cooking will grow. I think you’ll see that it’s actually pretty fun. Ready to jump into some recipes? Click here!
